Case Study: Whole Foods Markets
Whole Foods Market was founded in Austin, Texas, when four local businesspeople decided the natural foods industry was ready for a supermarket format. The founders were John Mackey and Renee Lawson Hardy, owners of Safer Way Natural Foods, and Craig Weller and Mark Skiles, owners of Clarksville Natural Grocery. The original Whole Foods Market opened in 1980 with a staff of only 19 people. It was an immediate success. At the time, there were less than half a dozen natural food supermarkets in the United States. Much of the growth of Whole Foods has been accomplished through mergers and acquisitions.
SignGrafx Teams up in 1986
SignGrafx relationship with Whole Foods began in 1986 when Whole Foods acquired Bluebonnet natural groceries of Dallas. SignGrafx had been the supplier of retail graphics for Bluebonnet for several years. Once introduced to Whole Foods store designers, SignGrafx was quickly chosen to fabricate the decor in their markets. SignGrafx state of the art wide format printing equipment, photo-registration profile cutting equipment along with a winning team gave us the advantage to be able to grow our partnership with Whole Foods Markets. In short order SignGrafx proved that our can do attitude combined with superior graphics products , great pricing and always on time delivery and in installation was the winning solution Whole Foods Markets needed to fuel their rapid expansion. Over the next several years SignGrafx supplied Whole Foods Markets with avant-garde retail graphics. In keeping with Whole Foods Markets branding, SignGrafx created environmentally green products wherever possible using recyclable materials and water-based inks for printing. Custom wall murals, aisle markers, product graphic panels, innovative menu boards, and removable wall decals are just a few graphic products supplied by our company.
SignGrafx tested. Whole Foods succeeds.
SignGrafx expertise was tested when a Whole Foods Market located in Houston, Tx. experienced a large amount of fresh goods spoilage due to the excessive light and heat penetration through the expansive glass facade. SignGrafx solved this problem in short order by installing custom printed perforated window graphics onto this glass facade. Not only do these graphics look great and draw attention to this location but they reduce the heat and light penetration into the store by 40% which was ample to solve the spoilage problem. These custom printed see-thru window graphics are unique because customers can see through the glass from inside the store and never realize that they are actually looking through a graphic installed on the outside of the glass.
Whole Foods: Innovators in the decor Industry
Whole Foods Markets are known for their exceptional store decor. Creativity and quality while adhering whenever possible to using recyclable products to brand their locations, Whole Foods management recognized the value of quality graphics and presentations. Whole Foods customers cherish the look and find themselves shopping in comfort in an atmosphere that always says “Fresh, healthy and wholesome”. It has been challenging to seek decor solutions to implement in these stores but SignGrafx has always met these challenges with success. From 10′ diameter dimensional wall plaques (made from a recyclable foam product and decorated with water-based paint) to dimensional routed and hand carved wood reliefs , SignGrafx team members excelled. Custom printed Wall Murals were used extensively to create and enhance the Whole Foods brand throughout their stores. SignGrafx fabricated and installed custom printed Wall Murals in Whole Foods Market locations throughout the United States. The Whole Foods Market brand, even though each store is distinctively different from the others, is uniquely recognizable as Whole Foods because of the quality graphics and decor items installed. Unlike Target Stores branding where each store looks exactly like all the others , Whole Foods Stores branding is unique. It’s the concept, quality and effective implementation of this decor that makes the difference. Management wanted local flavor in each of their locations to emphasize the ” fresh, local, farmers market” image which complements existing shoppers and draws new customers daily.
Whole Foods used SignGrafx decor to Stand Out
This concept has proven many budget conscious CFO’s wrong. Retail Store decor must deliver and reinforce the brand without regard to its cost. Great store decor costs money and is not available at bargain prices. Whole Foods has proven that buying the best decor that money can buy will result in unmatched customer loyalty and sales growth. Granted, Whole Foods Market caters primarily to the middle to upper class customer who are shopping for quality food for your family and are willing to pay a little more to know the source and quality of what they are feeding themselves and their kids. Other major grocery retailers have taken note and are attempting to copy Whole Foods Market. New ventures are attempting to duplicate Whole Foods Market. Notice how many major grocery chains have embraced selling “organically grown products”, meats, produce, seafood and dairy. They may be able to offer similar products at slightly lower pricing, but they cease to recognize that it is a winning combination of great products, exceptional customer service and fantastic presentation and graphic decor that makes the difference. Start your retail venture in the right direction, call SignGrafx and let us show you what we can offer you in store decor. You may be pleasantly surprised at how little it will cost.
